Compensation study vs. salary survey: which do you need?
By NovaPath · Published
A salary survey provides market pay data. A compensation study applies selected evidence to your organization’s jobs, pay practices, and decisions. The right choice depends on whether you need a reference point or an explained recommendation.
Compare the work you actually need
| Decision | Salary survey data | Scoped compensation study |
|---|---|---|
| What am I buying? | Pay information for a defined sample of employers or roles. | Analysis of your positions against selected comparison evidence. |
| Who matches our jobs? | Your team usually interprets role definitions and chooses matches. | Job matching and its rationale can be included in the engagement. |
| What about benefits? | Coverage depends on the dataset. | Benefits can be analyzed when included in scope and supported by data. |
| What will leadership receive? | Tables or access to a data source, depending on the product. | Findings, documented sources, limitations, and recommendations specified in the agreement. |
When a survey may be enough
You have a narrow question, clear job matches, access to relevant data, and someone who can interpret it. For example, a team checking one established role may need a reliable market reference before deciding whether a deeper review is warranted.
When a study adds value
You are comparing several different roles, preparing a leadership discussion, reviewing benefits alongside wages, or need a record of why each comparison was selected. A study should make the reasoning traceable, including where the evidence is limited.
For Head Start programs, schools, and nonprofits, job titles alone can obscure meaningful differences. Review duties, credentials, supervisory responsibility, geography, scheduled hours, and months worked before treating two pay figures as comparable.
Ask before you buy
- Which roles and locations are covered?
- How current is the evidence, and where does it come from?
- Are annual, hourly, and school-year pay figures normalized consistently?
- Who explains weak matches or missing data?
- Does the scope include recommendations, review, and revisions?
NovaPath offers scoped wage and compensation studies with salary benchmarking, position comparisons, benefits analysis, and documented findings. Confirm the roles, deliverables, data needs, and review process before the work begins.
